Phillips Exeter Academy was founded in 1781 by Dr. John Phillips, a graduate of Harvard, and a resident of Exeter.

The Phillips Exeter Academy Building which was erected in 1794 underwent extensive renovations to the bell / clock tower. The reconstruction of the tower brought it back to its original state.
